The Red Queen: Book Review
Let's Talk About The Red Queen
Non-Spoiler
The Red Queen is set in a world with two different kinds of people. There are the silvers and the red bloods. The silvers have powers and they rule over the red bloods. The red bloods are treated like trash unless they have a job. At the age of 18 red bloods are conscripted and sent to the king's war against Lakelanders, another country.
Our story focuses on Mare Barrow, a red blood, in the stilts. She is a skilled thief till one day her best friend, Kilorn Warren, is conscripted and she comes up with a plan to save them both. Their worlds turn upside down, and she ends up in a job working in the place.
Mare discovers here that she has immense power, which no red has ever possessed. The king holds her captive and tells the public she is a long lost silver's child. Mare is betrothed to the younger prince, to keep her in line and hidden in plain sight from silvers.
From the poor stilts to a princess in a place, she pledges herself to the Scarlet Gaurd. The Scarlet Gaurd is a group of red bloods that plan to riot against the oppressing society. Mare now surrounded by silvers plans to fight on the inside. It is a tale of adventure following a badass character that has to be on guard at all times.

**Spoilers**
Okay, so now that the people who have not read The Red Queen are gone. I called it. Maven was so perfect throughout the whole book, yet I have read enough young adult (YA) books to know what to expect. Just because I suspected it, does not make it hurt any less.
After the Sun Room shooting and the mysterious explosion, I had my suspicions about Maven. I thought that he cared for her if I am being honest. I think he does in his twisted way. I do not think that he faked everything, but his ambition, and his mothers', was worth more to him.
I know that Cal was not really about change or even about helping red bloods, but at least he was a good guy. I mean it hard to change the way someone thinks when they are raised a certain way. Mare ate out of Maven's hand, but she was ripped from her world. Now Cal is torn from the world he has ever known.
While I enjoyed Mare's character, I did not like that she would swoon over Cal, then hate him the next second. Then, she full out used him, but little did she know she was being used. It just sucked, but man it was amazing and sad to read.
I favor Cal, but that was before Maven was evil. I mean the dance lessons were my favorite scene, because we got more into a glimpse of warm, but closed off Cal. I fall so easily for the characters, is that just me?
I saw Cal as a strong soldier, but Maven was just a hurt puppy throughout most of the book. I mean he was jealous of his "perfect" brother, hated his unloving father and even was weary of his, literally controlling mother. I cried for a good ten minutes when I discovered the "real" Maven. I guess people in pain will do what they can to end it, and this was his way.
The Scarlet Gaurd taking and helping her, in the end, was such an exciting scene. I think the fight scenes were described so perfectly like I knew what was going on. While in some YA books, I get confused at the fighting scenes because there is so much happening. I am cautious of the Scarlet Guard because now I feel like I have trust issues with everyone. Thanks, Red Queen.
I am excited to see Cal and Mare together, but I also a part of me hope for Maven to come to a merciful end. That is just dumb hope for a character I want him to be because he has no mercy. I expect Mare to become the face of this movement, but will Cal follow her? Can she trust the Scarlet Gaurd?
I know there is a lot in this book, but these are my main thoughts. I wanna hear what you all think! Let me know in the comment section down below.
